Tesco Voucher Phishing Scam

Detailed Analysis

According to this email, which purports to be from Tesco, the recipient is set to get 2000 pounds worth of Tesco vouchers. The message claims that the company has had difficulty in sending the vouchers to the recipient because account records have not been confirmed. The recipient is urged to follow links in the email to provide details, ostensibly so that the vouchers can be sent.

However, the email is not from Tesco and the recipient will not receive any vouchers.  The message is a phishing scam designed to fool unwary recipients into giving their financial and personal data to online criminals.  The links in the messages point to a bogus website that ask for Tesco account login details as well as credit card data and other personal information.
All information submitted on the bogus website can be collected by criminals and used to commit financial fraud and identity theft.

The promise of free shopping vouchers is a common scammer ploy. Be wary of any message that claims that you have been awarded a voucher or gift card and must therefore login to an account to update details. It is always safest to log in to all of your online accounts by entering the account web address into your browser’s address bar.
