‘Tesco Anniversary’ £50 Coupon Facebook Giveaway Scam

Supposedly, giant retail chain Tesco has announced that everyone who shares a Tesco giveaway post on Facebook will be sent a £50 coupon to celebrate the company’s anniversary.

Supposedly, giant retail chain Tesco has announced that everyone who shares a Tesco giveaway post on Facebook will be sent a £50 coupon to celebrate the company’s anniversary.

The post claims that the coupon giveaway is for TODAY ONLY.  It features an image that supposedly depicts one of the free coupons.

However, the post is fraudulent.  It has no connection to Tesco and nobody who participates will receive a coupon. No coupons are being given away via this fake promotion.  And, the “Today Only” restriction is just a ruse.  In fact, there is no cutoff date. Every day is “today only”.

The post is a typical giveaway scam designed to trick you into exposing your Facebook friends to the same scam and divulging your personal information on suspect websites.

If you click the post, you will be taken to a scam website that asks you to complete a short survey about Tesco. The site will pretend to check your survey answers and then announce that you are qualified to receive the prize.

Next, you will be instructed to share the scam Page on Facebook and add the comment “Thanks”.  By sharing and commenting, you are helping the scammers by promoting their fraudulent material across Facebook.

You will then be instructed to click a “Claim Voucher” button. However, instead of opening a page with the promised £50 coupon as you might expect, you will be taken to another website that claims that you can win further prizes by entering your name and contact details.

The personal information you supply will be shared with dodgy marketing companies who will soon inundate you with unwanted phone calls, emails, text messages, and letters.

And, you will never get to claim your free Tesco coupon, which never existed to begin with.

Scams like this one are very common on Facebook.  Scammers have used Tesco’s name in their fake giveaways many times before. And the “anniversary giveaway” claim is an oft-used scammer trick.

If you see one of these bogus giveaway posts, don’t be tempted to participate. You have no chance of winning the promised prize. And you may risk your privacy and security by sharing your personal information with online scammers.
