According to various posts that have appeared on Facebook newsfeeds in recent days, Krispy Kreme is giving EVERYONE a free box of twelve doughnuts (or donuts) as a means of celebrating the company’s anniversary.
Users are urged to click to get their coupon.
But, alas, no amount of liking, sharing, commenting, or clicking will get you any free Krispy Kreme doughnuts. The posts are scams designed to promote dodgy Facebook Pages and accumulate large numbers of Page likes as quickly as possible.
Some versions also trick users into divulging their personal details on scammy third-party survey websites.
Some of the scams are using Facebook live video as a means of reaching even more potential victims.
The terrible realisation that this too is a scam may be doubly traumatic for doughnut lovers who were recently promised a free box of Dunkin Donuts in a very similar Facebook scam.
An example of the scam post:
Krispy Kreme is providing a free Dozen Doughnut Box to everyone! to celebrate 80th Anniversary! their birthday.
