Fraudulent ‘canceled order’ emails purporting to be from online shopping website Alibaba are currently hitting inboxes.
The emails claim that your order with Alibaba has been successfully canceled. They include the date of the supposed order cancellation along with a clickable order number.
If you click the order number, you will not be taken to the Alibaba website as you might expect. Instead, you will be taken to a spam website that tries to convince you to buy various health related medications and supplements.
The spammers apparently hope that at least a few recipients will linger on the spam website and buy its dodgy products.
Online criminals regularly use fake order emails to distribute malware and phishing scams as well as trick people into visiting spam websites.
If you receive one of these emails, do not click any links or open any attachments that it contains.
An example of the spam email:
Subject: Your Order with Alibaba
Your order has been successfully canceled.
You just canceled order 137-9688-5386 placed on May 30, 2017.
Status: CANCELED
Thank you for visiting Alibaba
