Messages circulating via SMS and social media suggest that an accompanying video depicts the crash of MH17.
The video is genuine, but it does not show the crash of MH17. Instead, it shows the crash of an Iranian jet in September 2009 in which all seven people on board were killed. The video was uploaded to YouTube in June 2011 and has circulated ever since.
Looks like this video may show crash of MH17!!
Messages Claim Video Shows Crash of MH17
Messages that are currently circulating via SMS and social media feature a video that they claim shows the crash of doomed flight MH17.
The compelling footage, shot from another aircraft, shows a large plane with its tail section missing plummeting to the ground and exploding in a fireball.
Video Does Not Show MH17
The video is genuine but it does not show the crash of MH17. Instead, it depicts a crash that occurred near Tehran on September 22nd, 2009. The Iranian Air Force Ilyushin IL-76MD ‘Simorgh’ jet fell to earth with the loss of all seven people on board.
Reports suggest that after an engine fire, the radar dome came off and destroyed the tail of the aircraft resulting in its crash.
The video of the crash was uploaded to YouTube on June 3rd, 2011 (See below). The description of the YouTube video correctly identifies the plane as the Iranian jet. The video has circulated ever since.
In recent months, however, the footage has been falsely associated with the MH17 crash.
