The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning people about a new scam campaign that uses the cross-platform messaging service, WhatsApp.

Almost every time I publish an article that discusses WhatsApp, at least one person will post a “What is WhatsApp?” comment.

According to this widely circulated WhatsApp post, you must forward a message to your WhatsApp contact list or your account will be deleted.

According to a message that is circulating via WhatsApp, the company has decided to let the app “work without Internet” at no extra cost. 

Unfortunately, this message combines information about a real threat with a silly virus hoax and this has caused considerable confusion.

According to a message circulating via WhatsApp, you can follow a link to win a 2018 Toyota Yaris. Supposedly, Toyota is offering the chance to win the cars as a means of celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Message claims that smartphone instant messaging application WhatsApp needs its users to re-send the same message to everyone on their contact lists to prove that they are active users because the company’s “servers have recently been really full” or are “very congested”.

A message that is circulating primarily via WhatsApp claims that European brewer Heineken is giving away 4 barrels of beer to celebrate its 140th anniversary.

According to a message that is currently circulating via cross-platform instant messaging service WhatsApp,  Pizza Hut is giving everyone 2 large pizzas as a means of celebrating “60 years of quality service”.

WhatsApp users are currently being hit by “urgent” posts claiming that they can get a free car by following a link.
